Re: [LI] timidity link

Well, in RH 5.2, there are some files in /etc/midi that need to be
copied to /etc before 'playmidi' can work. I am not sure about RH6.1,
I have not installed it. I have assumed your midi device is already
initialized properly!

Have you installed GUS sound patches? Kmidi needs them to play midi
files.

Kmidi is actually timidity with a QT interface, though I always prefer
timidity (actually timidity with ncurses interface).

Isn't CREATIVE PCI Ensonique a wavetable synthesis card? Timidity is a
MIDI to WAVE converter/player. It reads in a MIDI file, and plays WAVE
samples on your DSP, instead of using the actual MIDI device. Hence if
your MIDI device cannot produce quality music (or cannot produce music
at all), you can use Timidity, at the cost of increased CPU load.

I use timidity because it gives me much better sound quality compared to
my SB16.

RPM? I can give you something better. Timidity *source* is available
from Suntite ftp://sunsite.unc.edu/pub/Linux/something_i_dont_remember.

'something_i_dont_remember' can be
'apps/sound/players/timidity-x.y.z.tgz' or
'apps/sound/timidity-x.y.z.tgz' or
'something_that_is_not_too_different'.

You see I downloaded Timidity back in the dark ages, when Redhat 5.0 was
still used ;-)

BTW Timidity will be listed in Freshmeat. Do search.

PS. Rajesh, sorry for mutilating your mail. I had to do it because those
golden words of yours appeared in two different mails. And I used the
NC-cut-and-paste trick to assemble a brand new quoted message ;-)
