I got the same problem with RH6.0 (official RH)But if I typed atdt <phone
no.> at least the vsnl/mtnl terminal used to come. During the header
compression thing it used to hang. I even tried connecting to site thru
Netscape when this occured just to check., but it failed.

Jeff, do u remember when I asked you bout this at the LINUX DAY (CGO??). It
aws exactly the same problem that U r now facing.

    In my case, the modem worked fine in win95. The settings were also ok.
The modem dialed. It produced the high pitched (far from musical) hand
shaking noise. However, at the penultimate moment, the modem stops the
noise and hangs up and the message, 'pppd died unexpectedly'. Well, I
don't remember the exact message, but that was what it was like. This
problem got immediately rectified when I "downgraded" (more like
reinstalled) my linux to pcq RH52.
