  It means your ethernet drivers are not loaded

 To be sure  please check up with ifconfig
  it should indicate two entries one for  lo and
another for eth0

  Please find out what ethernet card you have .
for this please take a look at dmesg output
and  /proc/pci

  I dont know whther there is any other method of
identifying your network card other than physically
examining it
  Once you find out the card load appropriate module
for it
