Try switchdesk-kde. Basically do startx and have "startkde" in your
.xsession/.xinitrc.

If you want to run kdm at init level 5, here is a line from my
/etc/inittab:

x:5:respawn:/etc/X11/prefdm -nodaemon

Make prefdm a symbolic link to kdm. On RH 6.1 - this is a shell
script (which I edited to start kdm).
