Can U tell us more about the make of UR mouse and the port type ?
Stop the gpm daemon by issuing '/etc/init.d/gpm stop'.
Configure UR X using 'XF86Setup/xf86config' only after this.
The mouse will get probed by 'XF86Setup'.  U can edit the
gpm.conf file in /etc before U do a 'startx'.
