Apparently not , and how come the mail you received doesnt have the line ,
" Please reply to my above address " in it ?

<rant>

With no personal offense , Let me just state my views ...
1 ] He's obviously not in the mailing list [ I'm assuming LI lets non
subscribers post messages to the list ] ; For if he _was_ infact in the
mailing list , you would think he knows that every message , including the
ones posted as replies to his query would also reach his inbox.
You should therefore have cc-ed the mail to his address...maybe not sent
one copy to LI At all , since anyone on the LI itself presumably know that
Linux _does_ infact have a GUI.

2 ] What exactly _Was_ achieved in your mail anyway ? All that you said
amounted to sarcasm and no constructive answer at all. His first line was
, "I'm new to the list" ... and a question as basic as that which would
have been answered with an install of even RedHat 5.2 [ since it does
annoy you with some questions about configuring X ] should infact tell you
that he _is_ new to Linux/LI .

My point is this , If you dont want to reply saying " Yes . Linux _Does_
have a GUI " , DONT! You could either reply saying he should learn to
become independent and more dependent on Manuals / HOWTO's / and suchlike
once he's moved to Linux and give him other useful links like

http://metalab.unc.edu/LDP <--- Make sure you read EVERYTHING here ,
including the DOS->Windows->Linux HOWTO and the "Newbie" Section.

  http://www.linuxdoc.org/

http://members.xoom.com/debianut <-- has lots of links to non-debian
things also !

  http://linuxindia.virtualave.net/

[ Hint , Suraj , you're receiving this on cc ... so Read the above 10
lines and make sure you understand what's in them.... You _have_ to learn
to start using manuals/docs/etc and AFTER you _still_ havent understood
what's going on , you email a List , not before you start anything ,
asking for someone to write out a HOWTO for you . ]

I personally believe Getting into Linux is a _VERY_ _VERY_ steep
learning curve and the least the community could do is not do anything at
all , rather than belittle a newbie.

True , it _is_ a pain to address commonly asked questions , FAQ but if
you dont want to , dont do anything (!) If on the other hand , a
newbie were to receive weird emails , he would probably fear
posting to the list anymore ...

Personally , when I did get started on Debian a few days back , it _WAS_
depressing ( ;-) ) at first since _everything_ looked weird/complex and I
can definitely say that If Thaths/Shanu/Khader/Raghavendra Bhat had'nt
mailed the mails that they did, encouraging me / giving me debian specific
links [ Mr Bhat told me/us how to download a debian specific textbook from
ora.com -> I'm sure he's done that a few million times already , because
I received that mail from him when I posted a "Newbie Debian" list and
then I join the debian-user list and voila , 4 days later , some newbie
posts his query there and his mail comes in once again ! ] ,and teaching
me really dumb things like how to do a dpkg -i foo.deb , which I realise
NOW to be so trivial , I probably would have abandoned Debian and stuck
to RedHat ...

I'm sorry if I've hurt you / sounded mean ; I mean no offense , just
clearing up some feelings that a newbie might experience ...

And Suraj , for christ's sake , read the VERY last paragraph of this
email , which should read something like " search the archives at
lists.linux-india.org before posting your question " ... and DO IT too ..

</rant>

  Have a good one ;)

-Ravi.

PS : Suraj , and to answer your question (!) , Yes , Linux _IS_ GUI based
, check out www.kde.org / www.gnome.org ( I think ) for popular X
Environments...
