[LI] SO5.1 and date problem

I don't know about SO 5.1 but are you using `sh' instead of 'bash'? That
gives you the $ prompt. But, otherwise, I don't think there is any
difference, except that it runs programs in X mode (i.e, you can type in
commands like Netscape, Gnuplot etc. and expect it to run in X-mode)

Log-in as root, start X, look at the date/time routine in Control panel.
Is that how you changed it earlier?

Or, use linuxconf as a root. (no need for X, this works in both ways).
there is a time/date mode at the bottom.
