hi,
as for GTK, please consider the following resources.

1. Glade -- this is a visual tool to build GTK apps.
2. Online and downloadable version of the GTK+ intro
and tutorial.
3. The Barlow Book by TechMedia -- Rs 240 or some such
price. Very nice, lots of detail more than enough to
get you up and running.

and in case you are interested in prototyping apps
fast then there is Python/Perl bindings to GTK.

if  you are a C++ fan and would rather use the real
thing instead of the simulated OOPs using Gtk then
consider GTK-- , C++ bindings for GTK+.
