[LI] apc powerchute equivalent

hi all,

I have a apc 500V backup ups. I didn't buy the backup software 
PowerChute and the serial cable that comes with it.  I am using 
debian 2.1 and manually shutdown the system when the power goes 
off.  Is there any equivalent software to APC's powerchute?
And if yes, is the usual serial cable enough for the software
to work?
