I always do a normal shutdown by either the shutdown command or the halt
command ..i've never switched of the m/c without shutting it down..

yup..this is what is surprising me..b'cos as far as i know the bash binary
should not get changed ..but it gives a core dump and exits...but works fine
if i reinstall it from the rpm....

I'll try doing that..hope it works...and prevents bash from crashing in
future....
