Donno about the no. of users for your required enterprise messaging solution,
but I cant resist saying this...
why not HP's OpenMail (which bagged the 'Best Product of Show' at LinuxWorld
show)? well think of considering it only if u have  thousands of users 
geographically / linguistically spread. Its a costly but effective solution.
Beta Available for free download (linux port).. use clients of ur choice.
configuration is a TASK which is better done by its engineers
(like me! ;-)
(A single installation currently can support max 400000 users!!!!! and future
release... hold ur breath... its gonna be 2 million users....)
Nope, Iam not advertising/promoting it here... just couldnt resist the thought 
of enterprise messaging solution.

(POP, IMAP, LDAP, name it... X.400...sendmail)
