Re: [LI] Enterprise wide Email solution on Linux & NT

I fail to understand why having a LINUX box for an Email network is
complicated, we run an multilocational, ( India, German, Netherlands) email
service and our people access there mail from wherever they are, for a
firewall we use the TIS FWTK ( not many have heard about this on the LUG but
it is worth a try ! www.tis.com/fwtk ), which makes configuring people who
login etc rather easy and controlled task. All you need to have is a running
sendmail config, a popper 3, a DNS, perhaps a DHCP (if you need it), and
viola, it should work, yeah but saying is easier thand doing ( I spent a
cool 1 month getting all up and running but that was 1 year back and never
looked at the system after that !!). Also Ms Proxy 2.0 has a lot of problems
and inherent bugs in it(=read security holes) apart from which if It cannot
work with Unix behind I think it is useless, okay it does work after
tweaking a host of things on the registry (if you do not corrupt it) -I have
been through this exercise and each time I add a workstation on the network
it is just running a simple shell script

a) To have access to the DNS
b) to create the user account
c) entry into ./etc/aliases
d) run the author. manager of TIS

And that it is all with LINUX !, dont ask what all one needs to do with NT.

As far as a VPN goes, I think this term is rather misleading better would be
to clarify what you are looking at, as VPN is a term often misused in this
regard. I mean why of all the things have a Ms Proxy I evalueated it foir
the evaluation period of 120 days and then threw it out as half the things
would not work esp. when you have Unix boxes behind the proxy :-((. I can
give you a letter of recommendation against it but I guess you have to be
tough on it. I think Linux can be a perfect enterprise wide network, in
fact we use it like one as already mentioned. I actually dial up to my Nt
box, ( somehow my dialin does not work to the Linux , and never had the time
to figure that out) and browse the net using the companys leased line.. talk
about utilisation of resources.
