A bad Mail User Agent (MUA). When you send a subscription request to
majordomo@xxxxxxxxx you are usually asked to authenticate that you are whom
you claim you are. This is so that someone else does not subscribe your
email address to the list as a way of mailbombing you. The person trying
to subscribe will get an email to which they have to reply with a phrase
like 'auth 40034c0f'.

In this case the mail user agent (ie. mail reading software) seems to have
sent the authentication message to the mailing list instead of
majordomo@xxxxxxxxx
