In short, Redhat made a commitment to the Gnome project (www.gnome.org)
and did not ship the competing KDE with Redhat 5.x. Mandrake was born
as a result - they took Redhat 5.x and put KDE on top of it and it
became popular pretty quickly.

With Redhat 6.0, which has both Gnome and KDE, Mandrake is limited to
adding their own value added products to survive.
