squid startup problem

Hi!

I am trying to run squid on my machine (RH 6.0)
when i do squid -z, i get the following error:

FATAL: Unknown cache_dir type '/tmp/squid/cache'

Squid Cache (Version 2.3.DEVEL2): Terminated abnormally.
CPU Usage: 0.020 seconds = 0.010 user + 0.010 sys
Maximum Resident Size: 0 KB
Page faults with physical i/o: 163

I have made the /tmp/squid and /tmp/squid/cache directories writabe by
all.
Could not find anything at the squid home page too.

Any Pointers ?
