modem problem

hi all
      i have successfully connected to the internet
for the first time after fiddling with kppp settings
and got disconnected witin a minute. afterwards
whenever i try to connect to the net an error message
saying "NO CARRIER SIGNAL" pops and just waits. why is
this happening?
