linux safe from viruses?

hi all,
thanks Atul for the modem tips.
 I would like to know whether linux is safe from virus attacks?
I have Win98 and linux on my machine. I also have Norton Antivirus 5.0
for Windows. Will it be  safer to browse the net on windows or on Linux.
 As far as I know, there are no antivirus products for Linux?
If, while working in linux I open an e-mail attachment containing a virus,
is it possible that it can(at least theoretically) harm Windows 98 in any way?
