Programming as root probably has nothing to do with your problem. The reason
I said that was programming as root can be a little bit dangerous,
especially when you're trying to develop something new. Some error in your
program may wreck havoc. As non-root, there is nothing much you can do to
spoil the system irreparably.
Anyway, the good thing about Redhat is that most of the things work out of
the box. If you've installed RH 6.0 from Chip CD, guava and kaffe should
work without any trouble at all - they did so for me. guava is a default
install of RH 6.0.
Personally, I don't like JDK 1.2 too much. Sun claims to have made it
faster. The interpreter may be faster but the compilation takes way too much
time. I'd suggest you stick with 1.1 unless you have a compelling reason to
migrate to 1.2.
Do let me know the trouble with guava, if you have some
