Well, by getting the updates for XFree86, do you mean running pcqupdt? I've
already done that. And ( hence ), I probably do have XFree86-3.3.3
installed. This is even more likely since the Trident 3dimage 975 (generic
) is listed as one of the supported cards in my  Xconfigurator. After your
suggestion, I selected Custom monitor and specified SuperVGA 1024x768@60Hz,
with similar results as before. The machine still hangs after that first
kde screen.
