PCMCIA cards

i've problems with PCMCIA ethernet cards and my digital VP 700 laptop with
linux.

the cards are (1) xircom and (2) 3COM farallon, both of which have drivers
in linux [i use kernel 2.0.36 (RedHat)] and are properly installed. eth0
is initialized with correct irq and I/O address. the memory space
allocated is also proper. the /var/log/messages shows the correct
initialization messages. i tested with cardctl commands like status,
identity, eject, insert, etc and obeys correctly. lsmod shows proper
installation of modules and their usage.

the ifconfig shows the eth0 with IP and allied addresses, etc and is UP
and running with correct messages.

the problem is i can't ping/connect to my network. our network is an all
linux one with around 30 workstations and server.

if we invoke ifconfig with promisc option, it gives an error "network
unreachable". i'm absolutely out of ideas, where i have gone wrong.

any help will be appreciated.
