Unmesh, there is a utility called xvidtune that can be used to adjust
the picture produced on screen. You can run the program from a xterm.
The program has buttons for picture adjustment. Press the relevant
buttons to try and bring the picture back to physical screen size.
The program has a button labelled 'auto' which if turned on will let
you see changes to your screen instantly. So turn 'auto' mode ON. After
you have made all necessary adjustments, take a note of 8 numbers
displayed by the program. They are (in the order) HDisplay, HSyncStart,
HSyncEnd, HTotal, VDisplay, VSyncStart, VSyncEnd, VTotal.
Having obtained these numbers, you will have to edit you XF86Config
file (/etc/X11/XF86Config) and enter the above numbers instead of the
already present 8 numbers IN THE 'Modeline' ENTRY YOU USE. That's it.
Restart X and you will have a well centred display.
If you think you need more help in any specific step of the procedure I
have suggested, do ask for more help. Also remember to mention your
current video mode and refresh settings when you write.
WARNING!! If your monitor goes out of sync (when the display suddenly
vanishes or becomes terribly distorted), you should immediately exit
X-windows by pressing <Ctrl>+<Atl>+<BackSpace> together. DO NOT LET YOUR
MONITOR REMAIN OUT OF SYNC FOR LONG PERIODS, AS IT CAN BURN OUT.
