Firewall doubts.......

Hello ,

I have RH 5.2 on my Linux box and i want to configure it to be a =
firewall for our network. In  the howto for firewalling, it is =
instructed to compile the Kernel with   ipforwarding / Gatewaying turned =
OFF .=20
Why is this required ?

And can somebody tell me from where to obtain a firewalling software ?=20
What is squid ? is it a proxy server ??
