Hi,
This machine from which I write the message  is a celeron 266
(:( ) system. Still it runs RH5.2 ( Didn't get Chip CD yet :( .
No reply from chip) .and KDE 1.1 + Kernel 2.2.2.  without any
problems - pretty fast too.
may be you've to use make bzImage  to use a tight-er compression
?
