NetBIOS is MS TCP/IP
SMB is MS NFS

Getting rid of NetBIOS is not the same as getting rid of SMB. SMB
doesn't depend on the lower level network protocols - as has been
demonstrated by Linux by running it on TCP/IP.

SMB *is* a proprietary MS protocol that was reverse engineered.

It's not that easy. There are zillions of Win 3.1 and Win95 clients
out there which don't have support for this new hypothetical Win2k
protocol.
