Hi,
gnome and kde use the .Xclients file in your home directory.
As long as this file is present, you cant start fvwm2, wmaker or
the other window-managers. I keep a separate .Xclients.gnm for
gnome and .Xclients.kde for kde and copy the required one to
.Xclients and then startx to start the corresponding window manager.
If you want any other window-manager, you could remove the
.Xclients (or rather move it to another name) from your home dir.
In this case, .xinitrc and .wm_style in your home-dir. decide the
window manager.
