SMTP ????

Hi all,
I have tried to send mail to linux server on my LAN but the mail client
replied server not responding. I can receive mails through the server. I
checked this by creating a pop accooount on my linux machine and checking
it through some other machine on my LAN.
What could be the problem ?? Also i have removed sendmail from start up as
it doesn't respond at time of start up. Is this the problem and if yes,
how to solve it?
