First of all I am no Linux pro
Well to learn linux the best way is to use it
Next Read the HOWT O's for any problems and Other Documentation
There are a couple of books around but they cant compete experience.
To configure sound run the sndconfig prog
i have an ess1888 but i got it work by selecting Sound Blaster Pro
because most cards are SB something compatible
and do try all the irq and dma combinations
all the best
