Dear Bård

Thank you very much for the help. I followed same steps you wrote & my
server is running Linux now. Fortunately I also got Redhat 6.0 on time from
a local magzine CHIP. I successfully carried out steps 1-8 as u wrote. but
I could not boot from RAID. As per step 9 I did following changes.
   lilo.conf : root=/dev/sda
                    initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.5-15.img
fstab : changed root to /dev/sda1
conf.modules : added alias scsi_adapter ips

On running lilo got error : /dev/sda is not first hard disk (something
similar).
On booting got half lilo prompt : LI.
that's all, it hangs there, I also tried making boot disk afer above steps.
Booting from floppy takes 5 min. just to load vmlinuz. After that got errors
"kernel panic can not mount root /dev/sda1" Then made initrd again
with --preload ips. Then on booting from floppy got : 'mount point /proc
does not exists.' during boot up. due to this network card colud be
initialized.

I am still booting server from IDE HDD with initrd built with --preload
ips. Although it seems it's working all rigth I am still getting an error
  change_root: old root has d_count=5
Trying to unmount old root ... <3>error -16
Change root to /initrd: error -2

Could you please advise on how to make server boot from ServerRAID. During
all this excersize ie. after step 9 I have been switching IDE hard disk
install / uninstall.
I had installed Windows NT when the server was delivered to test whether
everything is working. It's Disk admin wrote some signature on boot sector
that time. Will it affect installtion of LILO?. I have attached system boot
log after booting from IDE.

Thank you

Manoj Phadke

I did as follows:

1. Set up the raid array the way I wanted it.
2. Connected a IDE disk to the IDE-channel on the 5500
3. Installed a basic RH 6.0 on the IDE-disk. Remember to include the
   kernel-source-packages.
4. Applied the patch and compiled the ips-module (1)
5. Insmod the ips-module
6. Used fdisk to partition the array and then mke2fs
7. Mounted the new partion(s)
8. Copied the all files from the IDE-disk into the new partition(s)
9. Changed /etc/lilo.conf, /etc/fstab and /etc/conf.modules (2)
10. Made a new initial ram disk (remember to copy the ips.o file to
    /lib/modules/2.2.5-15/scsi/ips.o)
11. Ran lilo, shut down, removed the IDE-disk and booted.
12. Install additional packages/partitions

Finito!

(1):
I put all lines ending with \ in ips.h on a single line
(2):
add "alias scsi_hostadapter ips" to conf.modules
