Minutes of FIRST Meeting of ILUG-Thane -Reply

What u plan to do is great..but wont it be much better of joining the
LUG-Bombay ? I too live in Thane, but LUG-B will give u the opportunity to
meet many more people and do things on a larger scale.

And anyway, your initiatives in Thane could continue even when you are
part of the Bombay list.

What say ??

ciao,
amit

Minutes of FIRST Meeting of Thane-LUG
		--------------------------------------

Date : Sunday, May 30, 1999
Time : 9:30 pm - 10:30 pm
Venue : Internet Center, Thane College.

Participants :
Chetan Kelkar
Ranjeet Walunj
Manoj Pethe
Suyash Apte
Harshal Jawale

Introduction :
- ------------

This was the first meeting called by Indian Linux User Group - Thane aka
Thane-Linuxers (T-Linuxers) to discuss ways and means to promote
Linux
in the yet unchartered sprawling metropolis of Thane. (Thane is a city
some 30 kms away from Mumbai and is known for its lakes.) It was
heartening to see 5 enthu guys turning up at 9:30pm on a Sunday night
after a World Cup cricket match !!!

T-Linuxers started off as a Mailing List on eGroups.com and has become
a
rallying point for enthusiastic linuxers in Thane. At present, there are
about 10 members. Since, the Engg. exams are presently going on, many
non-member folks are unable to whole-heartedly participate in the
activities.

Minutes of Meeting :
- ------------------

The meeting was called to order by Harshal who invited the members to
contribute ideas on ways to promote Linux in Thane.
The members agreed on two overlying guiding principles for T-Linuxers :
1. Spreading Linux Awareness in Thane.
2. Improving Linux Knowledge-base of T-Linuxers.

1. Awareness :

The members felt that Linux Awareness is still in its infancy in Thane.
The potential of Linux is still unknown amongst most Thaneites.

So the first and basic aim will be to increase awareness in the society
about linux and computers in general.
The multi-pronged strategy includes
* Giving free help to folks who want to install Linux, contacting
schools and colleges as well some Computer Education Institutes known
to
the members where free demonstrations on Linux installation can be
given. Simple and basic exposure if given to school kids can go a long
way in "catching 'em young".
* Talking to the Engineering college Professors to find out some good
projects involving Linux and helping the students to do it.

2. Knowledgebase :

Members can increase their knowledgebase by interacting with amongst
themselves and share each others knowlegde and resources.
Many members showed keen interest in learning C under Unix.

The various to-do things in near future discussed were -

a) Getting an overview of Linux, its potentialities and capabilities.
b) Being well versed programming in *C* language on UNIX / LINUX.
c) Getting a small network up and running on LINUX totally configured
and in working condition.
d) Installing ORACLE on linux, and explore database operations on Linux.

e) To keep a copy of SUSE linux to experiment with along with RedHat
and
also copy of the archives of Linux Gazette and Journal CDs which are
available with a member.

These were the basic plans discussed. However, the members agreed
that
they needed to involve more people in this effort. And, an active effort
needs to be taken in this direction.

The Internet Center at Thane College has excellent infrastructure to
experiment on Linux Networking. In addition, lot of website develepment
takes place at the Center.

Footnote :
- --------
Dr. Vijay Bedekar has been a driving force for popularising IT in Thane
in the Educational Fora. He has requested TLUG to devise ways and
means
to network schools in Thane and try to develop some kind of school
network like US's K-12 system adapted to the Indian scenario. This
presents quite a challenge to TLUG. We would like to invite suggestions
from all people who have worked on this front. We hope to develop a
model using Linux for networking that can perhaps be implemented
nationwide.
