Broken Playback of Wav files

Hi Folks,

When I play a WAV file from KDE it's playback is broken, i.e. there is a pause of some 
milliseconds in between at a regular interval as a result the playback is borken. This is
annoying specially when I start KDE i.e. startup event. Can anybody help me.

The CD Player plays fine but sometimes when I press the play button there is no sound.
 I have to open the Audio Mixer and after that the sound starts. Why is this happening ?

Are there any players of VideoCD (.DAT files) or  Mpeg files in Linux. Where can I get
player to play .MP3 files in Linux.
