Jeff,

There arequite a few books on the subject. But of course only a couple of
them are bibles as they are written by the program authors. So here is the
list:

   For TeX, The TeXbook
             Donald Knuth

For LaTeX, LaTeX2e, A Document preparation system
                Leslie Lamport

   The LaTeX Companinon
      Goossens, Mittelbach, Samarin

   The LaTeX Graphics Companion
      Goossens et al.

All the books are published by Addison-Wesley. They are available in
Bangalore and are not expensive. In fact, I do not whether anybody noticed
it: Amazon.com lists the last 3 books at approx. US$40-50. I purchased
them here for US$20-25. Thank god, somethings are available cheap here.
