If I compile the module in the kernel, then I won't need insmod
(modprobe)...
what do I need ifconfig route for?

Yup, pppd + chat (again, module compiled in the kernel)
There was an excellent article in PC Quest regarding using chat to
connect to the net...
Will probably use that technique...

Awaiting your replies.
