 They do manage to do so - but they charge for their services and their time,
 instead of for the code.  Or, they charge for the code, and release it under
 the GPL.  Those employers who know of the gpl and allow it usually have no
 hassles re this :)
 
 Then, there's the way redhat etc make money - include addons like service,
 access to priority ftp servers for download, their (now non-free) up2date
 facility etc.
