I am not sure how good Parallal port connections are going to be. I
think it would be too much trouble.

Why don't you try connecting them over serial line ? You can get a
null-modem cable, connect the serial ports of the two machines, run
pppd on both sides and you could come up with a good connection ...

Haven't tried it myself .. but i think it should work.
