There is a $100 solution for this problem now. The Linksys/Netgear/SMC
firewall, NAT (or ipmasquerading in Linux lingo), router, 4 ethernet ports, 
DHCP server all in one. The sad part is, these boxes are quickly kicking
out a lot of 486/Pentium boxes running Linux out of business. They're much
smaller (about the size of a walkman), consume less power and you don't
have to upgrade glibc :)

Add another $200 and you'll get a wireless ethernet bridge too.
