Cygnus, the company that enhanced gcc and supported it, before being
acquired by RedHat, was making a profit.  In fact, it was even listed as
a Fortune 500 company.  Though it has to be pointed out that Cygnus was
not a strictly Linux comapny and that their main source of revenues was
the embedded system market.
