The esd daemon is running on my system and I have tried the esdplay.
The error message that shows up is,
myhost:~/wav => esdplay alert1.wav
unsupported playback rate: 8000
and
/dev/dsp: Device or resource busy
So, obviously this seems to be a queueing problem.
