One possible solution is you could use ESD - the enlightened sound
daemon. It allows for mixing of multiple streams of audio. If you're
using "play" to play a wav now, just replace it with esdplay (if
you've got esd installed). You should be able to play multiple streams
simultaneously.

Of course, this may not be what you want. You could implement some
queuing system, which holds all incoming requests and plays them one
after the other.
