linux for ageing pc

Getting free distribution of linux form vicinity is
not so much of trouble, well some books ships 3
different flavours of it for free.
but if you have latest H/W then you should think again
if you are new to world o linux. 
Well i have PIII(turned up 1/2 yrs) with exerything
working fine under win98 but most of hardware seems to
refuse to work under Linux( my fav OS).
things works under Linux on my PC :
moniter
keyboard
cdrom
mouse
</only>
not to say my modem , soundcard, VGA card, Printer
does not work under Linux but perform well at
windows98 bugie software from MS corp.
