Cypherpunks fleshmeet in Bangalore

Hi All:

I have been in correspondence with Dave Del Torto of cryptorights.org
over starting a cypherpunks chapter in Bangalore. Dave was one of the
original team at PGP, and is also one of the leading lights behind
organising cypherpunks meets in the SF Bay Area and other places. This
would be on the lines outlined at
http://cryptorights.org/cypherpunks/meetingpunks.html - anybody
interested is generally welcome to attend, but we'll have to work out
the modalities for how to pay for the meeting place and refreshments
etc.

The Linux User community seemed to me to be the place where there
would be maximum overlap with the kind of people we're trying to
reach, so I'm making the announcement here first. I will also probably
take 5-10 minutes at the next ILUG-Blr meet to talk about this.

So what, then, is a cypherpunk ? Somebody who is interested in the
technical and political aspects of cryptography. In fact, the
political aspects are more important today than ever, with the
increasing ways in which your provacy is being eroded online.
Lawmakers do not seem to have a firm enough grasp of the technical
issues involved, and may also have a vested interest in surveilling
the citizenry. It is past time that there is *informed* debate on
these issues. Also, if we have a working infrastructure for strong
crypto in place (examples: ubiquitous PGP, IPsec, IPv6, etc.) it will
be that much harder for our rights to be eroded by sheer interia.
Also, if we don't do this now, it may well be too late.

I would welcome comments and suggestions on this proposal.

Udhay
