firewall and proxy server issues

hi
  can ne 1 tell me abt latest firewall tool kits better than fwtk(http://www.fwtk.org) for application layer proxy servers like ftp and telnet proxy servers.
   second thing is that if any one is using/used fwtk for firewall implementation pls tell me abt performance of fwtk and known bugs.
   third issue is that pls tell me that is proftpd is a good replacement for fwtk's ftp-gw?
