Ipchains

Hi all,
        I am using Mandrake 8.0 (kernel 2.4.20) and trying to configure
Ipchains, when i just type ipchains , i get the help and usage screen with
all the flags and all, but when i try to add a rule or a new chain, it says
"protocol not present", Just cristy sake when i tried ipfwadm, it said
"Generic IP chains not present in the system".
Cud nebody help me out here ...
