Kernel Upgrade?

I successfully upgraded my nice OLD Pentium from 2.2.13 to 2.2.19.  What I
would like to know is that how do you upgrade XWindows?  Because when I
type startx at prompt it still loads up the OLD CHEAP looking Slackware
KDE. Is there a way?  Does it do it along with the kernel upgrade?
