The basic idea is to have compatible kernel,bttv, and lirc
Lirc consists of 2 things
1) lirc driver which is lirc_gpio for pixelview
2) user space programs( 2 of them)
3) irexec and stuff like that
Fun part is irexec actually gives access to run commands which could be anything (eg fetchmail) start your X etc. etc. etc.
I made a rc script for bttv and lirc. I will send you tonight
