don't go with rdram, and for a 1 gig cpu i wud suggest that u go with
atleast 256mb ram. ram is quite cheap nowadays, so it doesn't make sense to
get less ram.

all ide hdds are lin compatible (at least last time i checked) the main
thing is that linux has to hav the drivers for the ide controller which
comes with your motherboard. Also try and keep away from 5400 rpm hdds, and
insted buy the 7200rpm hdds. this is something that can make a real big
difference in the performence of your system!

get a nvidia riva tnt/tnt2 if u r not on an extreme budget. These cards are
well supported by X (u hav to get binary drivers from nvidia for opengl) and
they are real fast. If u hav lots of cash to burn, then get a geforce or a
geforce2. Try and keep away from the mx series of nvidia chipsets. The are
really bad. The only mx nvidia worth looking into i the tnt2 mx, as it is
quite cheap nowadays.

get a creative or a yamaha chipset based sound card. If u get a yamaha based
sound card, then u will hav to install alsa.

basically most of the amd athlon cpus come bundled with motherboards, which
are seperate from the intel boards. also most of these athlon boards are
compatible with linux.
