Manually specify the nameserver IP address of VSNL or ur ISP in the /etc/resolv.conf and then try connecting. Also issue the route command and see whether a routing table entry for the interface ppp0 or whatever is there. If not add a routing table entry as

route add default gw ip_address_given_by_isp

This should solve ur problem.

I've already tried it all. Even I tried to connect to
a ftp site, even that was not working.
