RE: Linux kernel 2.4.0

I've been using 2.4.0 for a couple of weeks now, and find it quite
stable. Haven't experienced any subjective performance increase worth
writing about, but then life on the Bleeding Edge is always fun :)

If you upgrade your kernel, be sure to also upgrade the following
(this is what I had to do, your list may include other packages):

- PPP. The old pppd won't work with the new kernels.

- Modutils. Modutils-2.4.X is available from www.kernel.org and
mirrors. The old modutils will roll over and die if you try to use it
with 2.4.x, since the format libraries under /lib/modules has
changed.

All said and done, it's not to tough (IMHO) upgrading to 2.4, and I'd
recommend it if you have some spare time and lots of patience. Of
course, I took the geek way, compiling the kernel by hand. If you're
a package fiend you might find that rpm's/deb's make your life easier.
