Postgres can be installed on a standalone as i have done. in fact it is 
automatically installed when u install linux.
try the command:
/etc/rc.d/init.d/postgres start

it works on mine. if u don't have these direcotries, then, find the file 
called postgres and issue postgres start at command prompt.
