Configuring Sound for i810

Hello there,
Am having trouble configuring the onboard sound (AC97 Codec) on my
intel-810. I tried ALSA (ver. 0.5.10) which clearly states that it supports
AC97 on an i810, but it didn't work. Here are the problems :
1. During 'make install', depmod looks for kernel 2.2.16, while i run
RHL6.2 (From the PCQ CD) which is on 2.2.14.
2. According to the installation, I made some changes in the
/etc/conf.modules file, and now it says that /etc/conf.modules is more
recent than it should be. So it doesn't load the sound modules on startup.
Does ALSA assume that I have a higher kernel version ? Should I go in for
an older version of ALSA, or Do I need to recompile the kernel ? If so,
what changes should I make ?

Out of sheer desperation, I made some changes in the 'Makefile' so it looks
for my kernel (2.2.14), and ran the config again, but that didn't work.
I tried all sorts of absurd things, but nothing worked. Am out of options
now.Any clue?

Prahlad.
