kernel panic when "append mem="256M" " is added to lilo.conf

Hello Luggies,
I got struck with the problem with the huge amount of RAM.
I have 256MB RAM and 850MB of swapB.But the kernel version 2.2 and above
does not recognize the RAM of size more than 64MB.So according to some
advice given by the group I have edited the file /etc/lilo.conf.
The new lilo.conf looks like this,
<--------------------------lilo.conf starts here---------------->
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
linear
default=dos
append = "mem=256M"
image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.2.14-12
	label=linux
	read-only
	root=/dev/hda2

other=/dev/hda1
	label=dos

<----------------lilo.conf ends here---------------------------->

When I run lilo and reboot the machine,the kernel panics.
What I am missing?Have I included the "append line" in a right place?
The kernel panics like,
<-----------------------kernel panic message------------------------>
